[Tig] Scopes

Hi Dave,
I usually "lurk" on the TIG, but the statement, "a real colorist doesn't
need scopes.", made me crazy. A "real colorist" uses all the tools possible.
After 30 years of doing this thing, it's the scopes that confirm, or not,
what the trained eye has developed. A "real colorist" knows that you need
black blacks, gray grays and white whites. Maybe the "real colorists" are
passing the torch to people who don't get it.
Still using parades and vectors.

I know its all about whats on the screen but I love my scopes. They are the
truth. I can usually find whats wrong and right about a picture with a
vector scope. It seems a lot of rooms are using Omnitek type LCDs to cover
HD scope needs and/or to look more modern. In my experience the LCD scopes
offer very little detail but are better than nothing. As we are marching
towards software color correction and rooms that are not inherently video
based where does that leave video scopes? It seems there is some
resistance to put "old" technology in software rooms. Yet a histogram on
the gui is quite pedestrian.
I really cant imagine a job without my parade and vector. A younger
software based colorist suggested a real colorist doesn't need scopes. I
suppose there is some merit to that but your eye can deceive.
If I am delivering a video product I want scopes. When I am in a DI suite I
still would like scopes even though it doesnt apply in log. I guess they
are like sheet music versus rote. I would like to be able to look down and
scientifically verify that what I am seeing is occurring.
