Who is going to set up and calibrate the monitors in use during production and
post for this proposed system? It's difficult to find two people who will do
them alike, even if they know what they're doing.

Monitors are the weak link here, especially if we're talking about on-set
grading using a laptop. But even for "pro" standalone LCD's, with a few
exceptions, consistency and stability are not their strong points.

Another issue is: How does anyone know those LUTs everyone seems to love so
much aren't also correcting shortcomings in the monitor they're being viewed
on? I ask these sorts of questions on set and get blank stares.

Out of the literally thousands I've come across, I probably know a total of
five production people who know how to set up a monitor properly on an HD
shoot. My favorite: "It was set up by the guy at the rental house, dude!"
Right. If the guy at the rental house actually knew how to set up a monitor,
he'd be here on set doing your job for a lot more than he's making, dude.

Now if you propose a system where the DP walks into a DI or CC session, pulls
an 8x10 glossy out of a briefcase and says "I want it to look like this!", we
have something to talk about when it comes to repeatability all the way down
the chain.
