a radio antenna on a 12-foot mast isn't huge unless you're going for a
full-wavelength beam at 160 meters, and a lot of people need that kind
of height for radio reception when they're in the natural canyons of
LA or the man-made ones of the city. It's not only the distance, it's
the HAAT (height above average terrain) of your antenna, the angle to
the ionosphere/the frequency band desired, atmospheric conditions,
and multipath (like passing airplanes).

Anyway I always wanted to construct a passive radar system which would
be fun to do in L.A. where there's so much air traffic..
