I think that a while back, the feed and take-up servos weren't all that
reliable on telecines (no specific models being pointed at here). If you
have 2000ft of neg whirling round, it doesn't stop as easily or quickly -
and the wind tension is critical too. 1200 ft, or 3 x 400ft camera rolls
makes better sense.

So particularly if you were transferring dailies and racing forward looking
for the next camera stop, you'd prefer to be stopping a small two-seater
sports car than a loaded truck. 

Also, 1200 ft of 16mm is just under an hour's running time - so it was
convenient to set a new hour in the timecode for each reel.
