This does not seem like too much of a feat.  Set top boxes from DISH 
Network have been doing this since the first HD-capable model was 
released.  Even late 1999 vintage hardware produced nice clear (better 
than SD broadcast) SD output from HD.  The only use I ever found for 
this was to record a program on S-VHS tape.

Given that analog TV will soon go away, it is difficult to imagine a 
purpose for SD output.
