It seems that this article points out that there are problems with 
relying on proprietary closed-source applications whenever one needs 
to do work outside of the ordinary.  There is no indication that the 
producers looked beyond existing proprietary tools and what their own 
programmers (probably hired for the production) were capable of.

By treating each production as a "one of" event and not supporting the 
development of open source applications, the cost of production does 
not fall like it would if free portable tools were developed which 
could be used (for free) in future productions.  This notion that each 
production is a "one of" event closely parallels the building and 
tear-down of production sets.  This is a very wasteful way of doing 
business.
