What would make much more sense to me would be a laser recorder with a film
gauge-agnostic transport, that could run anything from 16mm to 65mm in any
number of perfs per frame. Surely a continuous roller transport past a vacuum
plate with electronic position sensing can be made that's _more_ accurate than
mechanical registration. I know that there was a proposal a decade ago for a 65mm
laser recorder, but the worldwide market was judged at the time to be fewer
than a half-dozen machines and it never happened.

But electronics and the IMAX market have progressed a lot since then, and the
lasers are now all solid-state, and we have IMAX movies, even institutional
ones, doing a full DI. Marty Mueller told me a year ago he has sold way more
than a dozen 15-perf 65m CRT recorder camera heads, and I think as a result of
Dark Knight we can expect a mini-boom in 65mm until digital catches up.

But Simon, you probably know the ins and outs of that better than I do?
