AFAIK these are the two of the most common failures.
1. Heater - cathode short circuit: raises the black level drastically,
along with other tell-tale signs
2. Cathode age: as the cathode wears, for a given cathode current a
larger area of cathode is used. This results in a soft(er) picture.
