there is a GPG (Gnu Privacy Guard) version of the TIG in beta now for
those who would like to try it.
The objective is to use GPG/PGP encryption from subscriber accounts
(you must have GPG or PGP set up on your mail client, with a public
key available on a keyserver) and have all posting traffic encrypted
arriving to the server and exiting the server. You will be asked as
part of the configuration to enter your public key on the TIG server.
You'll also have to encrypt your outgoing messages with the public key
of the Tig_ssl mailinglist, which is available on http://pgp.mit.edu
and will shortly be propagated to the other keyservers of record.
Posts coming back to you from the server will be encrypted with your
public key, so will be unreadable by anyone other than you. It will
be up to you to keep these messages secure.
This last point means that though all data is secure and encrypted
arriving and leaving the TIG server, once it arrives at the
destination addresses (the subscribers) they will be able to decrypt,
at which point the posts will be "in the clear" (i.e. readable by
anyone with access to that person's mail account, or, forwardable by
the person who has decrypted).
Contact me for further help, and be prepared to give me your public
key, in ASCII-armored form, or at least your key ID so I can retrieve
it from a keyserver. (this data public and not a security risk; your
private key is not revealed. See documentation for GPG/PGP for more
information.)
