Hi Rob
There are three kinds of daVinci panels currently in the field:

The original "Classic" systems and the earlier Analog Renaissance systems
use "12-Volt Serial" panels. These communicate by a serial (not Ethernet)
link, and are powered by the main frame through the serial cable, which uses
a 25 pin connector on the keyboard panel. The Joyball and SoftPanel are
powered through the ribbon cables.

Later Analog Renaissance systems and all of the "Pre-DUI 888" systems use
"5-Volt Serial" panels. These also communicate by a serial (not Ethernet)
link, but are powered by a separate power supply. Many of the early DUI
systems also use these panels, especially the ones that were upgraded from
Pre-DUI. These have a 9 pin connector for the serial link, and a separate
power connector on each panel.

Then the "Network Panels" came out at the end of '96. These also have an
external supply, but they communicate by Ethernet, not a serial link. They
are used for DUI, 2K, Splice, and Resolve. Many of the engraved keycaps are
different between these systems, but there is no difference in the internal
hardware, so replacement parts are the same.

It sounds like you had 5 volt serial but just received 12 volt replacements.
These will not work as-is with an 888 frame because it doesn't furnish the
needed supply voltage. Converting one to the other is not extremely
difficult, but if this is a warranty situation then it is not something you
should need to attempt.

Regards,

Craig
