We use a Schmitzer "Turbo Clean" to clean telecined rolls back to start
and to prepare them for scanning. This works by running it through 4
rolls of sticky tape and a vacuumed brush. It works pretty good for
dust, but doesn't get rid of fingerprints/stains. And yes, bad splices
can open up in that cleaner, though this has very rarely happened here.

If there is excessive dirt on a roll that one is sent back to the lab
for wet cleaning.

There are some newer solvents/wetgate fluids out that are less harmful
than perchlor. Kodiak has a liquid (Kodiak SES) that is used in the
wetgate option of the ARRI Scan and doesn't need special air filters.
That might also work as a cleaning solution, but I have not used it
personally.

    Best,
             Frank...

Standard disclaimer: I do not work for the above mentioned vendors, but
use their stuff for work.
