Mercury has strange properties, try dropping a bit of gold in it..
although it is a liquid it is not "wet" and has a negative coefficient
surface tension and is very heavy. Lead floats in mercury! maybe the
weight and surface tension properties helps pull everything off of the
film that is not nailed down.
I recently acquired a small bottle of mercury 40ml or so, it was
really heavy a friend wanted to rid himself of it and another friend
was looking for more for his collection, a nice deal. Well party #2
received his bottle, gratefully, and I thought it was kind of muddy
looking, Tyson took it and cleaned it, I guess it had tarnished?
weird stuff...
