We do multi-task when we are working in RaveHD but always give I/O 
priority...Dual Dual Core and Dual Quad Core systems really kick butt in this 
area.

Blackmagic also works on the Mac so this should not be the case if it is 
strictly a Windows thing. Drivers and apps working together play a huge role 
in getting this done efficiently, when they are written by two different 
companies sometimes they don't work as well as they should.
