This is mostly true, but I know of at least one manufacturer that has designed one preset to match the reference monitors most of us use in our color bays. For their HD LCD projectors Panasonic created a profile that is basically set to SMPTE standards, but they call it 'Cinema 1' because they think it's only for viewing movies. All the other settings (Normal, Vivid, Cinema 2, etc) are more arbitrary and are designed by engineers with their own agendas. I believe they may have also expanded this concept into some of their flat panel displays, but it was implemented and marketed by the projector group as a way to view images at home the way the filmmakers intended them to be seen.
Disclaimer: I was at one time employed by Panasonic, and have been a paid participant in the creation of the 'Cinema 1' color profile. But I would have done it for free because I think it's a great idea.
