Simpy reading the other side isn't enough.. Keykode readers that display
and/or burn-in keykode numbers also need to extrapolate (or navigate by
dead-reckoning). If the system misses a keykode does it stop burning in, or
simply go on incrementing the count? Is it intelligent enough to know when
to decrement the count instead?

Neg matching systems also have to interpolate between keykodes to identify a
specific frame, and they need to allow for the fact that the Keykode is only
25% likely to be exactly on a frame (and calculate the 1, 2, or 3 perf
offset in the correct direction). It's a different calculation if the
keykodes are descending.

I believe the Aaton Keylink system does all of this. I had to get my head
around it with the Excalibur neg matching system which also extended to
Keykode capture on telecine.

I've not had to think about this for a few years now. The headache had
almost gone away . . .
