For people just starting out as graders, editors or whatever, my guess  
is that this is simply a treasure trove. For more seasoned  
professionals, it's at least a chance to prepare for working with RED  
material. (With 1500+ cameras already out in the field and many  
thousands more pre-ordered, there's no indication that this will not  
be the case...)

Apple's Final Cut Pro can already edit 4K RED files natively in real- 
time, as 2K or 1K proxies. I'm just waiting for when Color gets  
support for .r3d files. (It's rumored to come this summer.) Lustre and  
Scratch are insanely nice and capable apps, but they're still a tad  
out of reach for most people's pocket books.
