I talked to Matt Allard from X-Rite (color management/calibration
company that recently bought GretagMacbeth and Pantone) today about
monitor calibration who shed some light on the whole "viewing mode"
debate we were having a few days ago.

In some high end home theater displays, knowledgeable, skilled and
certified home theater technicians often use these custom display
modes for clients who may watch TV under several different viewing
conditions. The technician will have various set-ups that the client
can call up based on viewing conditions, like "night time" or "day
time" or "high ambient lighting." That way, the image can be adjusted
depending on what kind of lighting is happening around the display.

I am not associated with X-Rite in any way.
