I also recall (when I was at the BBC) running some 16mm B/W film with a 2:1 vertically squeezed monochrome picture on the left of the frame, with the R-Y and B-Y also each 4:1 vertically squeezed on the right of the frame.
This was put through a 'box' (basically a DVE with a matrix) that outputted a colour picture.
You had to get the geometry right for it to work.
It appeared as an item on 'Tomorrow's World'.
For the guys on the other side of the pond, 'Tomorrow's World' was a weekly TV show looking at new technology etc.
Steve - you may even have been involved in this yourself (when TK was on the 1st floor in Stage V).
