>>I also recall (when I was at the BBC) running some 16mm B/W film with
a 2:1 vertically squeezed monochrome picture on the left of the frame,
with the R-Y and B-Y also each 4:1 vertically squeezed on the right of
the frame.

This was put through a 'box' (basically a DVE with a matrix) that
outputted a colour picture.

You had to get the geometry right for it to work.

It appeared as an item on 'Tomorrow's World'.

For the guys on the other side of the pond, 'Tomorrow's World' was a
weekly TV show looking at new technology etc.

Steve - you may even have been involved in this yourself (when TK was on
the 1st floor in Stage V).<<

Yes indeed, Chris Harding and I were responsible for setting up the
demo. The idea itself was interesting - basically the equivalent of MAC
on film. A high-res luminance signal followed by half-res U and V. It
was an attempt by the inventor to get around the problem of colour film
fading by recording onto black and white film stock. In esence, similar
to three-strip Technicolor on a single strip.

Unsurprisingly, it went nowhere...
