Cintel http://www.cintel.co.uk IBC Stand 7.B18

At IBC 2008 on stand 7.B18 Cintel International will be showing a number of exciting new features for its range of film scanners and image enhancement tools. Cintel will be showing a new, faster 4K workflow utilising a dataMill film scanner and DVS’ Clipster running at 5fps (frames per second). This very high rate of 4K data is transferred using the HSDL interface which is widely recognised as the most cost effective and efficient method of data transfer. Cintel Business Development Manager Simon Clark said “There are a number of fast 4K scanning speeds being suggested but we are able to achieve a sustained five frames per second without the need for expensive, and almost proprietary, interfaces or any specialised equipment”.

Cintel will also be showing, for the first time in Europe, the "X-Speed" Digital servo system for the Millennium family of film scanners. This in-field upgrade consists of hardware and software to provide vertical and horizontal stability that exceeds that of any other constant motion film transport. The X-Speed system is now standard on all new MillenniumHD and dataMill machines. The X-Speed System will also allow a new faster Pin Registration speed. X-Speed is available as an upgrade to Millennium, MillenniumII, MillenniumHD and dataMill machines.

Millennium HD and dataMill are the only film scanners capable of real time SD and HD, fast (15fps) 2K and 4K data with film gauges 8/S8/MAX8mm, 16/S16mm, 35/S35mm, 65/70mm. A number of new features for the diTTo will be shown at IBC. diTTo, the fastest pin registration scanner available, will have the ability to simultaneously provide either SD or HD output to coincide with the 2K or 4K scans. This new feature will allow "video" output for offline editing, for example, at the same time as the master 2K or 4K scans. diTTo now also supports Bright Systems BrightClip' intelligent data recording technology. A number of new diTTo software features including Waveform, Histogram and Vectorscope Monitoring and an improved user interface will also be shown.

Cintel will also be showing new imageMill enhancements. imageMill GRACE and GRACE_SR (which gives real time recursive correction in addition to spatial correction in only a single frame of delay) now includes a revised “Detail” control which has been developed in conjunction with a leading London Post House to provide a natural, yet very powerful, aperture correction effect. imageMill STEADY - the only real time image stabiliser with full post production quality will also be on display at IBC.

FilmLight http://www.filmlight.ltd.uk IBC Stand 7.A11

Annual drinks on the stand – Saturday 13th September 5.30pm – 8pm

At IBC we will demonstrate…

  • Parallel GPU – Baselight8 Parallel GPU is the fastest grading system available today. Already demonstrated to be capable of twice the processing capability of its nearest competitor, its self-contained parallel storage system can also provide three streams of real-time 4K at the same time. Baselight8 Parallel GPU can play 4K, display 4K, grade 40+ layers of 4K, and record 4K to disc, all simultaneously in real-time, without proxies, without post rendering, and without needing an additional dual-stream 4K SAN to complete the solution.
  • Parallel GPU for Commercials Grading – The Baselight8 Parallel GPU system is also recommended for high-profile SD|HD commercials grading. The brute force of this system can be used to grade commercials rapidly, interactively and with no delays. FilmLight has developed features specifically aimed at commercials grading, including an intelligent auto-conform system, versioning, scratch pads, and an efficient collaborative workflow between VFX and editorial systems such as Avid.

Parallel GPU will be available for all Baselight systems in October 2008.

  • SAN or Cloud Connectivity – All Baselight systems ship with generous quantities of local storage, but they can equally work with SAN or NAS shared storage systems. With the release of FilmLight’s Cloud Connectivity technology (standard on all Baselight systems), the Baselight local storage also doubles up as a shared storage solution. As well as better utilising Baselight’s local storage, Cloud Connectivity enables Baselight systems to use each other’s local storage as their own, or for third party systems (e.g. Autodesk Flame|Smoke, Pixel Farm PF Clean) to read and write to Baselight in the background.

At IBC, FilmLight will show both a Baselight grading off a SAN as well as two Baselight systems working collaboratively in a Cloud network.

  • Restoration Workflow with Baselight & PFClean – Recent collaboration between The Pixel Farm and FilmLight has allowed both companies to develop an efficient metadata based film restoration workflow, with Baselight and PFClean. Using FilmLight’s Cloud Connectivity, archive film can be scanned into Baselight and images can be tagged for restoration; PFClean can then find and read tagged images off the Baselight storage and put the result back on Baselight in the background. The final restored film can then be graded and sent to film or data, for output or archiving.
  • Editing Workflow with Baselight & Avid® – With the release of a Linux DNxHD codec and a Linux Unity client, Baselight and Avid products can now share data without copying or moving content off Avid storage. FilmLight will demonstrate this workflow at IBC, showing a project moving from offline to online and grading, to final deliverable.
  • RED Camera Support – RED have released the OSX version of the RED codec; the Linux version is due in a few weeks. This will allow Baselight (in the next maintenance software release) to support RED camera content (R3D files) natively. At IBC we will show a version of Baselight grading RED R3D files.
  • 3D Stereoscopic Grading – Baselight’s multi-stream 2K and 4K architecture is ideally suited to 3D stereoscopic grading, where two timelines are graded in parallel simultaneously. At IBC we’ll show the latest version of Stereoscopic grading on Baselight.
  • NEW 2K|4K Ultra High Resolution Film Recorder – FilmLight has formed a strategic partnership with Aaton, to create a revolution in film recording. The AatonK is a brand new multi-format film recorder that uses a revolutionary lens and imaging system to offer a much faster and significantly higher resolution recording compared to the latest laser recorders.

  • Northlight2 8K Film Scanner – Many facilities are upgrading from Northlight1 to Northlight2, and with several more buying their first film scanner, Northlight2 is becoming the preferred choice for the very best 4K film scanning.

We will also combine the Northlight2 with the Aaton K to offer highly attractive scanner/recorder bundles, providing the highest resolution scanning and recording capability with the speed increase provided at the recording end—where it really matters.

  • 4K Workflow – With the Northlight2 scanner and the Aaton K recorder, anyone will be able to see the benefits in image quality of a true 4K workflow. Only FilmLight can provide a cost-effective and well integrated end-to-end 4K workflow; double over sampling for scanning; multiple 4K streams for grading; true 4K MTF for recording; accurate film emulation, and scalable and affordable high bandwidth, high capacity shared storage.
  • Baselight Spirit Control – FilmLight will have a Baselight on the Thomson stand (7.F31) controlling a Spirit HD Datacine. Available now, Spirit control software can be configured with any Baselight system.
  • Truelight On-Set – In conjunction with Sony and Codex, Filmlight will show a workflow between a Sony F23 digital camera, a Codex disc recorder, and a FilmLight Truelight On-Set box. Truelight On-Set allows DOPs to accurately view content going from a camera to a recorder, or played back from a recorder, with 3D LUTs and CDL colour modifications. The defined look for that shot (a combination of 3D LUT and CDL settings) can be logged or embedded against the timecode of the shot, and then exported as a CDL list in an XML, EDL, or ALE file.
  • Truelight Unlimited – At NAB, we announced that we were opening up Truelight to become a much more facility-wide calibration system, supporting third-party probes and third-party hardware boxes. At IBC we’ll show the latest developments in Truelight Unlimited, demonstrating how simple it is to calibrate every display in your facility, rather than just the hero compositing or DI grading suites.

XDT Pty Ltd @ IBC, Stand 7H20 (Cinetal stand) http://www.xdt.com.au

XDT, in conjunction with Iridas, will be showcasing stereoscopic 2K uncomressed review over standard Gigabit ethernet from XDT's new catapult™ system.

catapult™ provides the fastest point-to-point frame transfers, and is capable of delivering the same local throughput performance of its storage arrays out to connected systems utilizing standard networking infrastructure.

catapult™ is an integrated hardware and software solution. The hardware consists of a 3RU, enterprise grade server that delivers a maximum data rate of more than 1,000 Megabytes per second read or write via a local RAID5 protected array (up to 11TB capacity). This hardware platform is then exposed onto the LAN or Switched Fabric with XDT’s catapult™ software component.

XDT’s cross-platform slingshot™ client provides an intuitive interface to transferring frame data to and from catapult™. Point-to-point data rates of 600 Megabytes per second are achievable over 6 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. XDT’s flipstream™ application, also cross-platform, enables customers with uncompressed film frames to review them from any standard workstation accessing a network attached catapult™ system. This is in contrast to the currently used method, which requires frames to be transferred to locally attached storage on a dedicated review system.

Saving hours of network transfers, catapult™ systems are capable of playing back two concurrent, uncompressed 2K (10-bit dpx log 1.85:1) streams over only 4 Gigabit Ethernet connections allowing for a highly cost-effective way to review stereoscopic material. For additional information or to arrange a meeting at IBC, please contact Erik Otto at ++61 3 9549 1122 or erik@xdt.com.au

Film Systems @ IBC Booth 5.A14

Film Systems manufacture a number of products for the film and data post production environment. We will be demonstrating:

  • Grain and Noise Reduction. The Aurora is an inexpensive grain reduction device which uses simple but effective non-recursive filters and “Gore” image processing to reduce grain and noise. Aperture correction with Coring allows sharpening of image detail without enhancing the grain. The Aurora processes in real time SD, HD, and 2K Data @15FPS using HSDL. It may be controlled scene to scene by either Da Vinci or Pandora color correction systems. Alternately control can be from a web interface via Ethernet.
  • Safe Title/Area Reticule generator. The Star provides fixed and variable cursors outlining safe action and title limits to SD and HD video images. Alternatively it can show 4x3 or user selectable cursors on 16x9 images or conversely 16:9 on 4x3. Area outside the cursors can be any level of transparency or completely blanked. Star also generates simple slates and idents using it’s built in text generator. Controlled from front panel or via Ethernet web interface.

Also from Film systems: Let Final Cut Pro control you telecine with Corona.

  • Telecine protocol convertor Corona in its base configuration provides an interface between most telecines* and any device that talks Sony remote protocol. This allows products such as FCP or DVS Clipster etc, to control telecines* directly minimizing the need for extra equipment and transfer passes.
  • Corona D/S provides dual sync editing directly from a telecine* to VTRs locked to different frame rates i.e. 23.98 and 29.94. Also logs Keycode.
  • Corona CP as Corona DS plus interfaces to Tangent CP200 control panels allowing control of most telecine parameters.
  • Nova multi-format Film Scanner. An inexpensive solution for SD, HD and 2K Data (HSDL) film scanning. Great image stability is attributed to the S16mm, S35mm RTS gates with control from “Meta Speed” digital servo. Options include; Super 8, 8mm film gates and optical sound. Low noise is due to a custom phosphor CRT combined with “Bright Eyes” light collection devices. Included in the Nova is the FGR, film grain reducer and "Clear View" a device that reduces aliasing and flicker in vertical detail by oversampling the source image. Controlled by Corona CP, Da Vinci or Pandora color correctors.
