High Tech, Prudent Cost Film in/Film Out from MWA Nova http://www.mwa-nova.com
MWA Nova, Berlin has manufactured high end solutions for the post-production industry since 1947. Since 2002 MWA has been developing more visual products aimed at high end video and film postproduction.
MWA's 16mm flashtransfer digital telecine has just been teamed with the SAMMA Solo/DIVA Solo content management systems and will be demonstrated in Front Porch Digital's booth, SU6117 during NAB. Front Porch is now marketing the flashtransfer with it's Solo systems for easy, simultaneous creation of multiple file types in just one film pass.
MWA Nova’s new flashscanHD began shipping in March, 2009, and is the first faster than real-time HD transfer system on the market for any gauge of film. It uses capstan drive and optical image stabilization to achieve transfer speeds up to 50 fps, and has "big iron" style triggerable color correction presets for non-stop transfers. Available for 8mm/Super8 and 9,5mm Pathe.
The flashrecord 35mm film recorder uses a high intensity LED light engine and Liquid Crystal on Silicon imaging engine to put HD and SD images onto 35mm film at up to 30 frames per second, with 2K and 4K output awaiting hardware.
In 1995, MWA created the revolutionary LLK series of laser optical sound recorders for motion picture sound tracks, the first major advance in optical sound technology since the Westrex in 1947. The LLK system produces the quietest analog stereo audio sound track film and has been installed in major studio and archival sound facilities world-wide. Now at series LLK5, new digital audio developments are in the testing stages.
The company’s continuous motion flashscan for 8mm, Super8 and 9.5mm film was the first totally ground up design for small gauge telecine, and sparked an evolution in small gauge transfer. More than 150 units are in use around the globe, including six at one Belgian film lab.
MWA's MB51 magnetic film audio recorders have been a staple in feature film dubbing facilities for more than 20 years, and helped build the company's reputation under the MW Albrecht banner. New optical measurement technology will soon allow easy replay of shrunken magnetic material.
MWA is the largest Digital Vision distributor in Europe, and represents DVS, Image Systems, San Lab Systems, Lindos and JVC products.
Last fall, MWA Nova and sondor Willy Hungerbüehler formed MWA sondor as a joint marketing alliance to represent both firms' products.

Digital Vision Stand SL8514 http://www.digitalvision.se/news/NAB2009.htm
Digital Vision is pleased to confirm that it will be attending NAB 2009, and looks forward to meeting its customers and partners in Las Vegas at their stand SL8514. Digital Vision will unveil a host of new products at this year's NAB in Las Vegas as well as highlighting its ability to work with RED RAW data and leading non-linear editing systems such as Avid Media Composer.
New for the show is the announcement that Turbine is shipping. Turbine is a unique approach to distributed processing that combines the reliability and scalability of a render grid with the performance of a computer cluster. It adds scalable processing power to all Digital Vision software solutions and can improve render times by a factor of 10 or more. Linked directly to the Film Master processing manager, as effects and layers are built up by the colourist, Turbine kicks in and distributes the work across all available nodes.
Stereoscopic continues to grow both in its audience appeal and in production volumes. Digital Vision has added a host of new stereo grading features providing easier grading of left eye and right eye and overall look on a shot or scene basis. In addition the company will be adding monitoring support for the Zalman range of stereo monitors for assist stations to allow reviewing of convergence and editorial decisions outside of the grading theatre.
Also to be unveiled at the show will be the 2009 release of the DVO image processing tools for film and video. These promise to provide a significant leap over the current, already impressive toolset; the DVO New Tracker, for example, allowing artists to track people's faces and objects with just a single button press and can deal with all kinds of motion automatically.
Digital Vision also announces that it is simplifying the iterations of its market-leading products. From NAB onwards, new versions will now be named after the year of their release, simplifying matters for customers who can be confident that a project created in Phoenix 2009 can be loaded into Film Master 2009 and so on.
Highlighting the fact that Film Master offers one of the most powerful and flexible ways of working with digital camera files, RED Camera's Ted Schilowitz will be presenting daily on the Digital Vision stand.

IRIDAS at NAB 2009 - Booth SL4728 - http://www.iridas.com
IRIDAS will present the latest versions of SpeedGrade, MetaRender and FrameCycler at the IRIDAS Booth (SL4728) in Las Vegas this year (April 20-23).
The IRIDAS booth will have dedicated demo areas for production, postproduction and stereoscopy. SpeedGrade users and IRIDAS staff will be avaible for in-depth demos and discussions throughout the show.
- Increased RAW Support
In 2009, IRIDAS increases its leadership in render-quality RAW processing with the introduction of the RealTime RAW 3.0 feature set in SpeedGrade and FrameCycler. The latest evolution of RealTime RAW adds support for RAW data coming from the RED One and Weisscam HS-2. Support for the Silicon Imaging cameras has been extended to include uncompressed .SIV files. A major milestone is the introduction of the Adobe CinemaDNG standard in all IRIDAS applications. CinemaDNG aims to unify the access to RAW data of digital cinema cameras. IRIDAS is a founding member of the CinemaDNG initiative and the first vendor to broadly support the format. CinemaDNG files can be played and color corrrected in real time up to 4K. SpeedGrade, FrameCycler and MetaRender can now transcode from proprietary RAW formats into the CinemaDNG standard.
RealTime RAW 3.0 has been optimized for the latest in processor and graphics card technologies. The new QuadroFX 5800 GPU from NVIDIA allows real time 4K grading and finishing directly on uncompressed RAW sources.
- Improved Stereoscopic Toolset
The built-in stereoscopic tools in SpeedGrade XR and SpeedGrade DI have been significantly extended in 2009 with the goal to further simplify the work on stereoscopic movies. The automatic stereo conform has been improved to support new naming conventions. Available stereoscopic monitoring solutions now include the latest technologies, such as dual SDI, dual DVI, interlaced, TI-pattern, shutter glasses, anaglyph and others. A new difference matte view allows users to quickly identify geometric misalignment in stereo footage and correct it interactively in real time.
- Dynamic Resolution
Dynamic Resolution, a new feature in the 2009 versions of Speedgrade and FrameCycler aims at speeding up workflows that involve wavelet-compressed footage such as Cineform or R3D material. Dynamic Resolution reduces the resolution during playback for smooth review. When playback is paused, the full resolution is loaded in the background, so the user sees the full quality frame while color grading and analyzing the image.
Dynamic Resolution works especially well with the new optimized Cineform Intermediate support in the 2009 applications, enabling quick real time review of Cineform footage in the field, directly from slow media such as CF cards or USB drives.
- Tangent CP-300 "Wave" Support
The new Tangent CP-300 "Wave" control panel can now be used with SpeedGrade XR, SpeedGrade DI and FrameCycler DI as well as SpeedGrade OnSet. The new entry-level product from Tangent Devices is a great choice for use in the field and as a cost efficient choice to get started with a grading suite.
- SpeedGrade OnSet 2009
SpeedGrade OnSet adds support for the new RealTime RAW 3.0 file formats, enabling users to directly work with footage from all digital cinema cameras currently on the market. SpeedGrade OnSet now connects to the Cine-Tal DAVIO display processor for real time look preview on a live SDI signal. In addition, SpeedGrade OnSet exports to LUTs compatible with the Blackmagic HD-Link Pro SDI-DVI converter and a variety of post solutions, such as Autodesk's Flame.
- P+S Technik OneBox
P+S Technik will show the SpeedGrade-powered OneBox solution at the IRIDAS booth. The OneBox is a field-ready postproduction system for processing RAW data from digital cinema cameras.
- Preview of SpeedGrade 2010
At the show, IRIDAS will give a sneak peek of the upcoming 2010 version of SpeedGrade. SpeedGrade 2010 has a completely revamped user interface with the focus on simplicity and elegance. The SpeedGrade 2010 preview will focus on upcoming new stereoscopy features, reconform, background rendering and versioning.

Bluefish444 NAB Booth # SL-7626
Bluefish444 (www.bluefish444.com) is introducing at NAB 2009 its cross platform Create range of 2K/HD/SD 3G SDI uncompressed video cards, which are immediately available. This extremely high quality range of cost effective PCIe cards are bundled with the Bluefish444 Symmetry acquisition, preview and playout software, and support Apple Final Cut Studio 2, Adobe Creative Suite 4, Autodesk Combustion and 3D Studio Max, and Eyeon Digital Fusion for use in digital content creation.
What differentiates the Create range from its competitors is the onboard 12 bit video processing, and Sinc(x) hardware scaling that combine to enable real-time format conversion at an amazing quality. The 12 bit video processing used throughout these cards offers four times the quality of traditional 10 bit pixel depth video processing.
Footage can be ingested and stored in the graphic / compositing software’s native RGB file formats, which removes the need for CPU intensive YUV to RGB conversion of source material when previewing and rendering. The 12 bit RGB to YUV colour space conversion also allows projects to be previewed in the highest quality YUV broadcast colour space without rendering a YUV version of the project.
The hardware based 25 X 25 tap Sinc(x) scaling algorithm provides for a 1/128th sub pixel scaling accuracy. This combined with the 12 bit-processing enables the Create scaling module to up, down and cross convert between 2K, HD and SD video resolutions in real-time at the highest quality.
There are three different models available; Create | HD, Create | 2K and Create 2K | Ultra each targeting a specific workflow within the digital content creation markets.
- Create | HD for DCC HD/SD 4:2:2 workflows
- Create | 2K for file based digital Intermediary 4:4:4 & 4:2:2 workflows
- Create 2K | Ultra for all digital Intermediary dual link 4:4:4 I/O workflows
Bluefish444 is also introducing the Epoch range of 2K/HD/SD PCIe 3G SDI & 3D stereoscopic capable video capture cards containing new Rapidflow+MR2 technology; these cards are available immediately. Applications include digital intermediary, digital content creation, video servers, encoding, decoding & streaming of MPEG and H.264, live and non-live CG supporting Windows, Linux and Mac OSX operating systems
RapidFlow+MR2 is a technology allowing the highest quality real-time hardware scaling for format conversion and extreme workflow flexibility through highly flexible signal routing. This technology is implemented in two optional hardware modules onboard the Epoch video card called Jetstream and VariVue. Epoch, Jetstream and VariVue use the RapidFlow+MR2 technology to work together seamlessly to enable up, down or cross conversion of any input or output video signal to/from Epoch whilst simultaneously routing the converted video signal(s) to any combination of Epoch’s monitoring and output options -- all at the highest possible quality.
In addition, Bluefish444 has announced that Axel Technology, Asynthic, Starfish, IVS and the Hego Group have incorporated Bluefish444 cards into their broadcast and post-production applications and products.

XDT Pty Ltd NAB Booth # SU-11419
XDT Pty. Ltd., a developer of advanced software-based solutions for digital film, will showcase version 2 of its flagship catapult system at NAB 2009. Catapult’s fastest point-to-point frame transfers make it ideal for DI and stereoscopic pipelines
Redefining point-to-point frame data transfers and uncompressed frame review, catapult provides the fastest possible point-to-point frame transfers using gigabit Ethernet connections. catapult is capable of delivering the same local throughput performance of its storage arrays out to connected systems utilizing standard networking infrastructure.
catapult is an integrated hardware and software solution. The hardware consists of an enterprise grade server that delivers a maximum data rate in excess of 1,200 Megabytes per second read or write via a local RAID5 protected array (up to 13TB capacity). This hardware platform is then exposed onto the LAN or Switched Fabric with XDT’s revolutionary catapult software component.
In addition, XDT is also showcasing catapult bridge. This new addition to the catapult family of products provides NFS and CIFS client access to frame sequences stored on any catapult system, and is available immediately.
catapult's frame sequence scheduling and prioritizing is maintained while catapult bridge is accessing files, allowing high-throughput streaming frame access to operate concurrently with high-IOPS random access. A low latency (less than 50 microsecond), non-volatile cache with extremely high IOPS (over 120,000 random read/write), provides concurrent access operations for NFS and CIFS clients at the level of a high-end SAN.
By employing aggressive frame level read-ahead, render node CPU's are kept from stalling while waiting on network storage I/O. Small block read/write operations from software renderers are kept away from centralized storage until file access has ceased. Intelligent frame level write-back ensures that sequences are written back to catapult in optimal order for streaming. There is no need to re-order sequences.
